Presented by Dr Benigno Acea during the II Conference of the Spanish Association of Breast Surgeons

Elsevier presents a new edition of Surgical Oncology of the Breast. Oncoplastic and reconstructive techniques.

This book intends to be a tool that allows the surgeon to choose the most suitable procedure for each patient, as well as to plan and execute all of the surgical techniques presented.

During the last decades, surgery has represented a basic treatment in the management of women with breast cancer. However, circumstances have evolved considerably in the last years, so that the role of surgery had to adapt to the new challenges. Aware of this situation, Elsevier, in collaboration with Dr Benigno Acea, has published the third edition of Surgical Oncology of the Breast. Oncoplastic and reconstructive techniques.

During the II Annual Meeting of the Spanish Association of Breast Surgeons (AECIMA), held last weekend in Barcelona, Dr Acea, author of the book and chair of the Association, presented the book.

“Oncoplastic and reconstructive breast surgery is a “method surgery”, i.e. it is possible to learn how to perform it, thus achieving foreseeable results. In order to achieve this, it is necessary to have training in oncology surgery as well as in the different remodeling and reconstruction techniques of the breast”, explained Dr Acea.

In this sense, “Surgical Oncology of the Breast intends to be a tool that allows the surgeon to choose the most suitable procedure for each patient, as well as to plan and execute step by step all of the surgical techniques described”, stated the expert. “Specifically for professionals in the field of breast diseases, this book may help them better understand the alternative techniques available for the surgical management of breast cancer. This will undoubtedly improve the personalized discussion of each patient in the multidisciplinary groups.”

This new edition is focused on the new oncology concept and describes the surgical procedures adapted to each anatomical region of the breast and to each type of breast, thus allowing for the personalization of surgical oncology. “In this way, the result of this new concept is a higher quality of the conservative surgery and an increase of the immediate breast reconstruction; this results in a better self-esteem of the patient and a lower psychological impact,” stated Dr Acea.

What´s new in the 3rd edition

As stated by Dr Benigno Acea, “the previous edition supported many surgeons and gynecologists in the beginning of their oncoplastic experience, as it offered a detailed step-by-step description of the procedures”. “However, some of them manifested the need of more videos showing the technical details of the descriptive procedures, as well as the availability of an online platform in order to not depend on a physical tool, such as a DVD.”
That is why there are some additions in this third edition:

  • Description of the low visibility approaches for tumor resections and the different techniques for skin-sparing mastectomy or skin and nipple-areolar complex sparing mastectomy.
  • Addition of 12 new chapters on breast reconstruction, thus allowing for the collection of most of the surgical procedures available for breast cancer. These chapters follow an educational structure and all the information is based on real clinical cases.
  • Introduction of new iconography in the chapters dedicated to oncoplastic techniques.
  • Finally, Elsevier has made efforts to complement the written book with multimedia material available online: 52 videos, 31 clinical cases with images and a gallery with all the images of the book. This allows the reader to check the book online at any moment and anywhere, which is very useful in the clinical setting, both for healthcare and educational purposes.

Besides renowned experts working at the breast diseases units of the most important hospitals in the country, some of the collaborators of the book are well-regarded professionals from Latin America, whose participation enriched the scientific content of the book with experiences beyond our own borders.
